Q: Did KMP invent the "guess an animal" program?

A: No, he saw output from it in a book he read in high school (around 1974 or 1975) and thought it would be fun to implement such a program in BASIC. Then when he got to MIT and found Lisp (in the late 1970's), he implemented it in MACLISP and several other dialects of Lisp.
